Highbury Grove School – Islington
Over the last 8 years Highbury Grove has pioneered, trialled and pushed boundaries in relation to all young people having an entitlement to several years of high quality, classical music tuition. As a result well over half of the students now study and play a classical instrument. The pilot programme for MiSST was developed at the School.
Highbury Grove now has several orchestras and many ensemble groups, in addition to choirs and rock bands, and puts on concerts of outstanding quality. Over a quarter of students on the MiSST programme also attend some form of extra-curricular musical activity.
In 2016, Highbury Grove saw its best ever results for GCSE Music with a third of the class attaining an A* grade, and all receiving grades A*-B.

Testimonial: Joya, aged 18
Story: When I started at Highbury Grove, I was given the opportunity to learn the violin in the Music Specialist School. I remember being inspired by the School’s Scholars Orchestra and was accepted into it after achieving a Grade 2 Distinction. I have recently completed my Grade 5 on the violin. Being exposed to other enthusiastic musicians propelled my desire to seek more musical extracurricular activities. Hence, I joined MiSST’s Saturday School programme in Year 10.
Music has always played a huge role in my life, and the MiSST programme has helped push my abilities by providing opportunities to not only tour Europe and play in prestigious venues but to also pass on my musical knowledge unto others.
